A new resource book celebrating design and best practice has been published by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) for anyone involved in specifying or designing with architectural ironmongery and hardware.

The book, available as a free download at www.gai.org.uk/specifier, showcases award-winning architectural ironmongery projects and products from this year’s GAI/RIBA AI Specification Awards. As an SBID Accredited CPD learning opportunity, it also provides a source of information and reference for specifiers and designers, with articles, best practice advice, and latest updates on competence, standards, and legislation.

Among the feature articles, RIBA past President Alan Jones discusses meeting the challenges of fire performance, life safety, acoustic separation, security and user requirements in today’s ‘more for less’ construction culture.

The guide discusses the value of working with a Registered Architectural Ironmonger (RegAI) to achieve world-class project delivery, compliance, and outcomes. And there is information to help specifiers find fully qualified architectural ironmongery professionals, including a full RegAI and GAI member directory.

GAI Technical Manager Douglas Masterson said: “The GAI Specifier’s Resource Book is not just a celebration of design excellence and best practice, but a guide to some of the key issues impacting on today’s AI and wider construction sectors.

“The aim has been to produce and distribute a resource which helps architects, architectural technicians and technologists, interior designers, M&E consultants and others involved in the design and specification processes to better understand some of these issues, and underlines the importance and value of engaging with high-quality AI professionals and companies from the very earliest stages of their projects.”

The new GAI Specifier’s Resource Book 2022 is available as a free download at the link below, and also available is a series of free GAI technical specifier guides focusing on the legislation, standards and best practice involved in key areas of AI specification, from fire safety, fire and escape doors to accessibility, security and access control.

About GAI

Working as a not-for-profit professional association, the GAI supports, assures and represents architectural ironmongers, wholesalers, and manufacturers around the world. They promote the highest standards of education, technical excellence and professionalism in the sector, and promote these standards to the wider construction industry and its clients.

Commercial insurance is often synonymous with buildings, contents or employers’ liability insurance. It can be difficult to recall or understand the need for professional indemnity (PI) insurance. Marsh Commercial are here to explain all you need to know about PI insurance.

Do interior designers have to take out PI cover?

SBID members are required to take out PI Insurance as part of their overarching commitment to quality and consumer protection. Also, some commercial clients may ask to see evidence that PI cover is in place in advance of an appointment. Compulsory or not, many professionals opt for the cover because of the protection and security it provides in the event their advice or service fails to meet a client’s expectations.

What’s the benefit of PI?

Having a policy in place can reassure your existing clients and help you secure new clients. While you may endeavour to deliver perfection, occasionally mistakes will happen. A PI policy protects you and your business if your clients alleges financial loss. PI insurance is part of the SBID’s commitment to quality, promoting confidence and strengthening the industry with an appropriately equipped workforce via enhanced professional trading standards.

The SBID’s trusted insurance broker, Marsh Commercial, explains all you need to know about PI and how to choose a provider. Sign in to SBIDPro to learn more. Members also have an opportunity to join the upcoming CPD webinar with a live Q&A  hosted by the insurance experts.

Property developers’ view on the future for green buildings https://www.sbid.org/developers-view-future-green-buildings/ Fri, 11 Dec 2020 10:30:14 +0000 https://www.sbid.org/?p=51577 The post Property developers’ view on the future for green buildings appeared first on Society of British & International Interior Design.

Market expectations and perceived building standards are holding back the country’s progress to construct net-zero buildings, according to the UK Green Building Council, UKGBC. The organisation would like to see developers adjusting investor and owner-occupier expectations about green buildings and this should be set out early in a development’s narrative.

It is often said buildings were completely fitted out to maximize appeal during the leasing stage, resulting in over-provision and waste as typically incoming occupiers remove final fit-outs.

UKGBC head of business transformation Alastair Mant said: “Achieving the necessary reductions in embodied and operational carbon requires large scale changes to how buildings are designed, constructed, and operated. There are many barriers along the way and we must work quickly to identify them and the corresponding opportunities to overcome them.”

Workplace gurus have in recent years enjoyed looking through the generational lens to help predict behaviours and changes effecting corporate interior design. The impact that millennial’s have made upon the workplace for example, assisting organisations move from hierarchies to networks, has been significant. Attention is now being paid to the current school and university population – Gen Z or iGen (internet generation) born after 2000 and the suggestion is that technology impacts on design could continue to be profound.

SBID Education Council expert, Jim Taylour, Head of Design and Wellbeing at Orangebox sheds light on how workplaces and educational institutions should be adapting to suit this new wave of technology-fuelled behaviours.

Can nature really increase our health and wellbeing? SBID Council expert, Oliver Heath is a qualified Domestic Energy and Green Deal Assessor who founded an architectural and interior design practice combining sustainability, consumer engagement and communications to inspire the uptake of future thinking in the built environment. He promotes happier, healthier places to live and work through his projects as designer, writer, and TV presenter. Oliver shares his thoughts with SBID on how Biophilic Design in interiors can impact health and wellbeing.

There is a growing body of evidence to suggest spending time in nature can increase our health and wellbeing. In fact, healthcare experts are now prescribing time in nature to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, we are spending less than 10% of our time outside,[i] and most of the time we do get to spend outside is still in the urban environment. So, what can we do when our day to day lives don’t support getting out into nature?

Creating spaces and buildings that are as eco-conscious as they are design-forward is becoming a pressing requirement for the interiors industry. Russell Owens from Zip Water UK explains why the future lies in making sustainable design beautiful. ‘Sustainable design’ aims to reduce or eliminate negative environmental impact through thoughtful design. This means working to create buildings and products that are more energy-efficient, reduce waste and use limited resources throughout their life-cycle. Further to this, specifiers and designers can give preference to materials that will contribute to people’s health and wellbeing – another important element of sustainability that is often overlooked. . .
